The Transit Center at Manas was activated in December 2001 when coalition forces deployed to Manas International Airport and began supporting Operation Enduring Freedom and the International Security Assistance Force after the terror attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
The Transit Center has approximately 1,200 U.S. military and 900 Kyrgyz and Department of Defense contractor personnel performing day-to-day operations at the premier air mobility hub supporting military operations in Afghanistan. The wing's around-the-clock missions include aerial refueling, airlift, onward movement of troops, and building partnerships and continuing relationships with the people of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The U.S. and Kyrgyz Partnership

The United States and Kyrgyz Republic are strategic partners in the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan. This partnership has grown and flourished since 1992 when we started diplomatic relations. Our Kyrgyz partners are vital to every part of our fourfold mission-air refueling, airlift, onward movement of forces and humanitarian assistance and developing partnerships for the long term. We take our relationship seriously and we look forward to our continuing friendships in the future.
